New article – digitization of the water sector

How well does digital technology meet the needs of the water and wastewater industry, and when will it be useful?
Digital technology is often highlighted as an important part of the solution to the challenges facing the water and wastewater industry, but digitization is progressing slowly.
A new article by our former PhD students Amelie Bennich and Viktor Bergion, together with David Nilsson, researcher and CEO of Framverket, examines how digital and data-driven solutions correspond to the actual needs of water organizations.
The article shows how digital solutions are not yet sufficiently adapted to the existing structures of the water and wastewater sector. They can contribute to long-term goals such as increased efficiency and better performance, but are less suitable for short-term needs that require quick solutions.
The authors therefore point to the importance of balancing both short- and long-term needs so that neither daily operations nor long-term goals suffer.
